#166 Watercolor on paper portrait of Daniel Martin sitting in a red high chair. His name is written at the bottom. It is signed and dated May 24th 1830, Jacob Stauffer. 7 1/8" x 8 5/8". Jacob Stauffer was born in 1808 and died in 1880. He was a storekeeper, job printer, pharmacist, lawyer, botanist and photographer, as well as, painter. A portrait of Jacob as a child, dated 1811, along with one of his sister, Elizabeth, by Jacob Maentel are in Tillou "Where Liberty Dwells". An ink on paper of "The Homestead of Joseph H Landis" by Stauffer, is shown in Robert Bishop's "Folk Painters of America. Provenance: The Garbisch Collection and Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Kern, RI $1850.00 |
